Metal-poor Stars
نویسنده
چکیده
The abundance patterns of metal-poor stars provide us a wealth of chemical information about various stages of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. In particular, these stars allow us to study the formation and evolution of the elements and the involved nucleosynthesis processes. This knowledge is invaluable for our understanding of the cosmic chemical evolution and the onset of starand galaxy formation. Metal-poor stars are the local equivalent of the high-redshift Universe, and offer crucial observational constraints on the nature of the first stars. This review presents the history of the first discoveries of metal-poor stars that laid the foundation to this field. Observed abundance trends at the lowest metallicities are described, as well as particular classes of metal-poor stars such as r-process and C-rich stars. Scenarios on the origins of the abundances of metal-poor stars and the application of large samples of metal-poor stars to cosmological questions are discussed.

Statistical equilibrium of silicon in the atmospheres of metal-poor stars
Aims. The statistical equilibrium of neutral and ionized silicon in the atmospheres of metal-poor stars is discussed. Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects are investigated and the silicon abundances in metal-poor stars determined. Methods. We have used high resolution, high signal to noise ratio spectra from the UVES spectragraph at the ESO VLT telescope. Line formation calculations of S...
متن کاملDetailed Abundances of Two Very Metal-poor Stars in Dwarf Galaxies
The most metal-poor stars in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) can show the nucleosynthetic patterns of one or a few supernovae. These supernovae could have zero metallicity, making metal-poor dSph stars the closest surviving links to Population III stars. Metal-poor dSph stars also help to reveal the formation mechanism of the Milky Way halo. We present the detailed abundances from Keck/HIRES ...
متن کاملThe most metal-poor damped Lyα systems: insights into chemical evolution in the very metal-poor regime
We present a high spectral resolution survey of the most metal-poor damped Lyα absorption systems (DLAs) aimed at probing the nature and nucleosynthesis of the earliest generations of stars. Our survey comprises 22 systems with iron abundance less than 1/100 solar; observations of seven of these are reported here for the first time. Together with recent measures of the abundances of C and O in ...
متن کاملChemical Composition of the Carbon-rich, Extremely Metal-Poor Star CS 29498–043: A New Class of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars with Excesses of Magnesium and Silicon
We analyze a high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectrum of the carbon-rich, extremely metal-poor star CS 29498–043, obtained with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph. We find its iron abundance is extremely low ([Fe/H] = −3.7), placing it among the few stars known with [Fe/H] ≤ −3.5, while Mg and Si are significantly overabundant ([Mg/Fe] = +1.8, and [Si/Fe] = +1.1) compared w...
متن کاملAluminium in metal-poor stars
Previous calculations of the statistical equilibrium of aluminium in the solar photosphere have shown that NLTE populations hardly affect Al line formation in the Sun; however, in metal-poor stars the influence of electron collisions is reduced, and a UV radiation field enhanced due to smaller background line opacity results in more pronounced NLTE effects. Thus analyses based onNLTEpopulations...
